ABSTRACT: Utilizing the Brazilian hinterland as the stage, Vidas secas problematizes not only the relationships that individuals establish with the regional space, but also with the people who constitute this locus. In this sense, the arid world built throughout the narrative refers to the drought in various aspects. In this sense, the natural condition of the Brazilian countryside is articulated to the lack of a social perspective of the characters, so that the external and internal aspects of these lives are intertwined. Thus, it seems interesting to analyze how the language of Vidas secas explores the regional and social relationships. More specifically, the relationships between power and struggles in the Northeastern hinterland. Therefore, considering the social dimension of the book, the intention of this paper is to discuss the marginalization of Fabiano, mainly that regarding power relations among him – who symbolizes the oppressed – and his oppressors – represented by the boss and the yellow soldier. For such reason, there were analyzed extracts of Vidas secas that contribute to Fabiano’s animalistic representation. It can be seen by the initial analysis that the marginalizing process of the character happens through the (non) use of language, that the role of language is not only to defend one’s own position, but also the position other individuals occupy and, primarily, that Fabiano is aware of his animalistic character, but resists going against his fate.
